The Writer: A Final Poem
It began with brokenness
Her first broken heart.
She wrote the most enticing
She called it, The Breaker and the Broken
She received awards
world wide acclaim
And so she said, “To write beautifully,
I must be
And so she locked herself away
into the darkness of her solitude
She led the loneliest life
Hidden from friends
Hidden from love
Until she learned to fear it
She learned to fear the outside light
Thinking it would only burn
Then at the end of her life
When the writing was immortalized
but the awards had faded,
and there was nothing more than a faint light
“If I had been more like the characters I had created
…Then would I have been happy with life?
But would I have written just as beautifully as I did in the darkness?
Perhaps I had learned to love the light?
Then I could have written in the light with a smile and not
a face full of tears.”
She struggled for another breath
“What a shame,”
“To have written fantasies
When Life was given for us to seek those and live them out.
If I had been The Seeker, or the Wanderer…something more than simply The Wonderer….
could have been something
To look back
and Smile Upon.
I could have been more than
I have only been
